We’re a walking stack of bones wearing elaborate flesh disguises.

These masks are beautiful and chaotic: full of feelings, contradictions, anxieties and dreams.

Behind the mask: a skull. Profoundly simple. Unfazed. Adorable even.

It doesn’t blink or panic. It doesn’t care if your hair is undone or your career path unclear. It’s just there, quietly reminding us that all the surface noise is temporary.

Artist statement

A Colombian-born artist and designer based in Hertfordshire. Originally trained in graphic design in Colombia, his creative journey has spanned editorial design and animation, the latter becoming his professional focus after relocating to England in 2000. Alongside this work, Amelines has maintained a personal practice of visual exploration—dabbling in illustration, photography, pyro-engraving, carving, and any medium willing to host an idea in need of exorcism.

In his current series, Amelines repurposes vintage portrait postcards, layering them with acrylic paint, ink, and pens to transform the original images. Each figure is carefully “intervened” with additions that respond to their pose. Be it furniture, animals, or a well-placed tattoo—before receiving a signature gesture: a painted skull over the face. Rather than a mask of death, these skulls are a stripping away of surface, revealing a shared and surprisingly expressive identity beneath. Equal parts memento mori and mischief, the work invites viewers to regard mortality not with dread, but with curiosity, humour, and perhaps a wry smile.
